Eternal Woman

200B 2/4
1998
7'6"h x 29"d at base
Patinaed Bronze
Eternal is striking in her sparseness of mass. She emotes the essence of female even within this minimalist sculpture. Note the classic Hostetler hallmarks; the elongated form, the bend in the knee, the exaggerated roundness and purity of the head form, the lack of detail in the face, all in balance. The rough texture of the surface contrasts the smooth flow of the curves, all creating a stirring portrait of woman.

Bronze with dark brown patina, highly textured surface. The figures seem to grow out of the ground like trees and fuse at the top to become one. Tribal Figure

172B 1/6
8'10"h
Tribal Figure was cast from an original wood carving of the same title. You can see the carving marks and checks in the wood that were transferred to the bronze. So, she looks very wood like, but with the long lasting qualities of bronze.

Tribal Figure is the tallest and final sculpture of a body of work titled "Semaphore", which means signal flag. This series is characterized by a frontal pose, clean lines, minimal details and a wrapped like form towards the top third of the sculpture. She does embody David's goal of trying to create the essence of feminine with spare, strong curves and form.

David had been studying Jungian dream theory and was very aware of his own dreams. Tribal Figure was a restful of a dream in which tall willow like forms were coming toward him, brightly lit in the center. He felt they were trying to communicate with him in a very calm and soothing manner. He awoke and drew a sketch, which subsequently developed into a print series and sculpture series.

This is the first sculpture to which David adds non-wood materials to the form. The face is unique-the defined eyes capture you. There is a rustic, raw and primitive quality to Anasazi #2, with the legs puncturing the earth like base, the natural shaped horns and the severely shaped torso. The breasts imply the female- but you could easily view it as a male figure-which brings up the question-does the gender need to be defined?
